Not a great deal has changed in the 2024 Ford Explorer, which hits the ground running as one of the best-selling SUVs in America. Minus 2023’s hybrid powertrain access, this popular family carrier comes in 8 appealing trims, most of them with RWD or AWD options.

Ford Explorer

The Explorer base trim features include a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite of driver-assist technologies, tri-zone climate control, rear auxiliary climate control, and SiriusXM satellite radio support. The base model has a 4.2″ instrument panel and an 8″ touchscreen replete with the Ford Sync 3 interface. Installed in the first five trims is a turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder engine, which delivers a potent 300 hp at 5,500 rpm.

Ford Explorer XLT

A few aesthetic extras appear on the XLT, such as body-color door handles and chrome lower-body accents. Inside the car, you get a larger 6.5″ instrument panel and a 10.1″ capacitive LCD. The XLT also introduces rooftop side rails for easy roof rack installation.

Ford Explorer ST Line

ActiveX trimmed seats boost interior luxury in the Explorer ST Line. For help with parking and maneuvering, there’s a 360-degree camera with a split-view display. Adding a sporty feel are the dual chrome exhaust tips, black skid plate elements, a black rear bumper applique, a black mesh grill insert, and an Explorer hood badge. Audio is upgraded from a standard 6 speakers to a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system.

Ford Explorer Timberline

The headlining features in the Timberline cater to multi-terrain driving, and they’re not found as standard on any other trims. For instance, this model is exclusively 4WD, comes equipped with all-terrain tires, and is protected by steel skid plates at the front, rear, and under-body.

Ford Explorer Limited

Some nice things materialize on the Limited trim, like front parking sensors, leather seating with attractive accent stitching, first and second-row heating, first-row ventilation, and an optional 14-speaker 980W audio system.

Ford Explorer ST

The big story with the Explorer ST is its performance upgrade to a twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine delivering 400 hp at 5500 rpm. This model has quad chrome exhaust tips and sport-tuned independent front and rear suspension. A 12.3″ instrument cluster display also appears at this point.

Ford Explorer King Ranch

On top of the ST’s performance hike, the King Ranch adds luxurious Del Rio leather seating on all rows with Mesa/Norias colors and King Ranch “W” logos. The central armrest is also in Mesa Del Rio leather.

Ford Explorer Platinum

Topping the trim levels is the distinctive Platinum, with its satin aluminum grille and side rails, a leather-seated interior with tri-diamond stitching and Platinum badging, and illuminated front scuff plates.
