Ford has long been an expert on pickups, with diverse offerings that reflect the diverse needs of local and global truck drivers. Today, your Ford dealership will be comparing two esteemed pickups: the electric Ford F-150 Lightning and the mid-size Ford Ranger.

Performance

The Lightning runs on two electric motors that combine to produce 452 horsepower in XLT models and 580 horsepower in Lariat and Platinum trims. All models can harness 775 lb-ft of instant torque, which contributes to the Lightning’s 10,000-pound maximum towing capacity with the Max Trailer Towing Package. Maximum range in higher trims is 320 miles, so you can remain confident as you venture outside city limits.

The Ranger has several engine options to choose from. The standard 2.3L EcoBoost engine produces 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the available 2.7L EcoBoost V6 kicks up 315 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The Ranger Raptor trim has a slightly larger V6 engine that offers 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. While the Ranger’s power doesn’t quite match the Lightning, it’s still capable of hauling 7,500 pounds, making it ideal for the job site or a day at the lake with the boat.

Interior and Tech

Both trucks have spacious cabs with seating for up to five. Both can be outfitted with an almost unlimited number of luxury appointments, including genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a premium Bose audio system. In lower trims, the Lightning comes with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, while upper trims carry a 15.5-inch display. Wireless smartphone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a native navigation system all come standard.

In the Ranger, a 10-inch touchscreen comes standard across the board, though drivers can upgrade to a vertically-oriented 12-inch display if they wish. Wireless smartphone connectivity is standard, while all other features are optional.

Exterior

Both trucks are offered exclusively in a single cab and bed configuration. The Lightning has a SuperCrew cab configuration (4 full-size doors, seating for 5) with a 5-foot bed, while the Ranger has a SuperCrew cab with a 5.5-foot bed. While the Lightning offers less cargo space in its bed, it makes up for it with its 14.1-cu.ft. front trunk that holds up to 400 pounds.

The Lightning’s styling is sleek and modern, with a signature LED light bar that spans the closed-off grille. The Ranger styling’s veers toward rugged and brawny, with more aggressive hood sculpting and a wide, upright grille.

The full-size electric Lightning offers drivers futuristic styling and tech alongside efficient electric power, while the Ranger offers a traditional truck feel with excellent strength for the job site and a more navigable size for the city.
